Five Bahamian women – Mary Ingraham, Georgiana Symonette, Mabel Walker, Eugenia Lockhart and Dame Dr. Doris Johnson – led the Women’s Suffrage Movement in The Bahamas. The journey to female enfranchisement spanned more than a decade. It took place against the dramatic backdrop of the Burma Road Riots of 1942 and the Contract of 1943, gaining momentum during the General Strike of 1958 and the quest for Majority Rule. The suffragists were greatly influenced by the Declaration of the Atlantic Charter, Sir Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech, and the UN Convention on Human Rights of 1948. Bahamian women voted for the first time on November 26th, 1962.
This film narrates the story of the Women’s Suffrage Movement with special attention to its 5 leaders and the women and men who supported the suffrage for women.
